How to Become a Martial Arts Instructor

Have you ever watched your instructor teach and thought, “I’d love to do that someday”? Many martial arts students ask, “How do I become a Kempo instructor?” The answer is both straightforward and meaningful: it starts with a desire to serve others, and a willingness to grow.

At our school, that journey begins by joining the GOLD Leadership Team, a structured program designed to develop the foundational qualities of great instructors: leadership, communication, and interpersonal coaching skills. Knowing Kempo and being able to perform its techniques is one thing, teaching those techniques effectively to others is an entirely different skill set.

From Student to Leader

Becoming an instructor requires more than just talent or rank. It demands leadership, the ability to motivate and encourage others, and the patience to guide students through frustration and confusion. A good instructor doesn’t just show the moves, they inspire confidence, provide clarity, and help students believe in themselves.

It also requires an understanding of how people learn. Everyone absorbs information differently. Some are visual learners who need to see the technique. Others are auditory learners who grasp ideas by hearing explanations. Still others are tactile or kinesthetic learners, who need to feel the motion through physical practice. A great instructor learns to adapt their teaching to meet the needs of each individual student.

Why Join the GOLD Team?

The GOLD Team (which stands for Guiding Others with Leadership and Discipline) gives you real teaching experience in a supportive environment. You’ll assist in classes, mentor younger students, and receive direct feedback from instructors to improve your communication and teaching techniques.

Many martial arts schools offer similar programs, often named SWAT (Special Winning Attitude Team) or STORM (Special Team of Role Models). These leadership tracks all share one goal: to give dedicated students the opportunity to grow into confident, capable mentors.

Next Steps Toward Instructorship

Once you complete the GOLD Team program, you may be invited to join our Certified Instructor Program, a structured path with four levels of instructor development. Upon completing Level 1, you become eligible to teach part-time, or even full-time, if positions are available and your skills align with the school’s needs.

Whether you want to be an Assistant Coach, a Lead Instructor, or one day a Chief Instructor, the path is open to anyone willing to commit to learning, serving, and leading.
