On June 8, attendees embraced their inner warrior at Silayan Filipina’s Arnis workshop. We were treated to an engaging cultural history lesson and learned basic, introductory moves for Arnis, the traditional Filipino stick-fighting martial art. We practiced double-stick Sinawali drills, single-stick attacks with counterattacks, and fancy V footwork. Master Bryan discussed the development of indigenous martial arts over the centuries, including how the Filipinos hid the art in folk dances during the Spanish occupation.
